There are many good things about my job. But the best best part is when you’re asked to support a poorly patient with a specialist piece of equipment and when you start that and you see instant results.
For example on the neonatal unit we are frequently asked to start a therapy on little babies that are finding it hard to oxygenate their bodies effectively. So this machine delivers a gas which helps with the oxygen transfer in the Lungs. You usually see a improvement in the oxygen levels in the blood of babies when this treatment has started. This always gives you a great feeling accomplishment!!
I love playing detective to try and work out why people are sick. You have to piece all the bits of the puzzle together and when you work it out you know what treatment you should give. It is so rewarding and when you see a treatment work because you solved the puzzle it is really cool.
I think my favourite part is when you solve a puzzle that you’ve been working on for a really long time! All the little puzzles fit into one giant one so it’s really nice when you can see you are making progress, especially if you didn’t feel you wee getting anywhere for a while!
I like lots of bits (getting to go abroad for conferences is very cool), and when I was still working as a nurse the best bit was the feeling that you had played a small part in helping to make someone better. In my current job the best part is teaching my students about the human body and seeing their faces when they are enjoying it and learning lots. That makes me think they will go on to be great nurses and take good care of their patients, and I will have played a small part in that. 🙂
I like it when people come back and tell me that they are no longer dizzy because of the help I gave them. I also like finishing projects or magazine articles and seeing them all complete and ready for other people to read.
