Lots of technology! Computers are vital, and we use lots of different medical devices to help teach our students clinical skills. We also use little hand held clickers to allow our students to answer questions in class, and I can then see on my screen how many students got the question right, which helps my teaching. 🙂
My job uses lots of different technology. Computers and microscopes are probably the most important though. Microscopes let us see really small things in our cells and ours have lasers in them too. The lasers let us make the cells colourful and show us lots of exciting things that help our research
So much technology. In the hospital we use a lot of machines and devices that do lots of different things. We have machines that can help people breathe or help peoples heart beat or take over the job of the kidneys. I also use computers a lot and create models of peoples hearts to test treatments on. All of these technologies have been developed by very clever scientists and engineers!
We have lots of different machines – usually worked on a computer – for testing different parts of the ear and hearing nerve.
The tech audiologists handle most often are hearing aids. These are little devices which pick up sounds nearby using microphones and make them louder, so that someone with a hearing loss can hear them. All modern hearing aids are ‘digital’ – that means that they amplify the sound with computer technology. A digital hearing aid can do lots of different things to the sound – making sure that quiet sounds become loud enough to hear, without making loud things too loud or distorted – making high pitched sounds lower – having a ‘zoom’ setting, so that you pick up sounds from in front only etc. Hearing aids can’t make the sounds all seem ‘normal’ but they can make things much easier for people to hear.
Some hearing aids now also work like bluetooth headphones – they can connect to your phone and computer. That can be useful for all sorts of things, like phonecalls and music.
