I have seen the lungs a couple of times during organ transplant and open heart surgery and they look pink and rubbery on the outside and on the inside they look a lot like sponges.
Yes, healthy lungs look and feel a lot like big pink sponges, but with a smooth surface. If you smoke your lungs quickly fill with tar and look black, and they lose their nice, spongy texture.

How have you been able to touch a lung?
