My dad had a lot of heart problems when i was younger and that inspired me to look into the heart. It was then that i realised how amazing the human body is and how much is still unknown

I always naturally just loved science and learning about how things worked, and I was lucky and had great science teachers at school. I think good school teachers are amazing, as they can make you think about things you had never thought about before. I also watched lots of nature programmes on TV, and that made me love the natural environment, and want to learn more about it. My brother died very suddenly when I was 16, which was terrible, but it made me want to learn more about the body, and made me wonder what I could do to help people who were sick or injured.

I had heart surgery when I was 4. This meant I met a lot of doctors and was in and out of hospital a lot. I wanted to understand what was wrong with me and I wanted to help people like the doctors had me. I decided to be a doctor and as part of this I also get to try and find new ways to help people too.

This is a bit lame compared to the answers so far, but I just loved maths. Ever since I was little, I have played number puzzles for fun and I am fascinated by problem solving and patterns. I couldn’t see myself earning a living from that, so I had to think of something… good problem solvers make good scientists! I chose to study Chemistry – plenty of maths but with colours, crystals, metals and the chance to gets your hands on other cool stuff!

I have always just loved science and was particularly fascinated by the world around me. Like Marie, I had good science teachers too who encouraged me to ask questions and try to always learn more. When i was younger i was also fascinated in animals and used to watch nature programmes and read magazines abut insects.

I enjoyed science at school and was lucky to have friends that also enjoyed science. I particularly liked the practicals and the write up of lab reports – which then made me want to apply for and study biomedical science at university. I’ve always had a passion to help others and have worked at care homes and at events for children – so would have been happy to pursue a career down either paths.
